ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT SOMEONE YOU KNOW?

If you think that someone you know is becoming involved with violent extremism, there are a few things you can do which may help slow down or stop that process altogether. Keep in mind that these strategies are informal ways to disrupt the process and are better suited towards people that are in the early stages of the journey towards extremist violence. At no point do we encourage people to put themselves in harm's way and solve the problem by themselves. If you become aware of anything that shows that someone you know is playing a more active role in any aspect of carrying out acts of violence, it is your responsibility to alert the authorities immediately.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

1. Simply talk to them. Find out what their concerns are and why they want to be involved.
2. Help them to seek more information. Point them to websites that challenge the claims made by violent extremists. Here are some useful 
links.
3. Give them some alternatives. Tell them about other ways to make a difference. For example by contributing to a charity for Palestinians or Syrian refugees, learning about non-government organisations that provide services to asylum seekers, getting involved in a youth group.
4. Encourage them to talk to different people about their view so that they can see that violence is not widely supported.
5. Get them doing something else. Involve them in hobbies, sport or other interests.
